ECS Minors

This minor educates STEM professionals in rigorous fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI), rooted in computational disciplines.  Graduates will possess key knowledge in AI, enabling the application of AI techniques to other disciplines and/or preparation for further study in the field.

Course Requirements

To complete this minor, students must take a minimum of 18 credits (six courses). The minor includes three courses focused on AI fundamentals and programming, and three courses covering computing foundations.  Students must complete the minor with an overall grade point average of at least 2.5, and with no individual course grade below C-.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, students must submit a Declaration of Minor form (available through the Office of the Registrar).

The civil engineering minor is designed to give students the opportunity to learn and apply basic engineering knowledge to solve problems related to the analysis, design and construction of civil infrastructure. Students enrolled in this program have the option to focus on one specific discipline or explore several areas of civil engineering.

Course Requirements

To earn a minor in civil engineering, students must complete at least 18 credits (six courses) with a combined GPA of at least 2.00. The program includes two core courses, two focus area courses, and two additional CEE courses at 300-level or above.

Admission Requirements

This minor is available to all University students who have the necessary prerequisites and have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above, on a space-available basis. To be admitted to the program, students must submit a Declaration of Minor form (available through the Office of the Registrar). A maximum of 3 transfer credits are allowed upon approval by the minor coordinator.

The Computer Engineering minor offers students the opportunity to study design methodologies, digital logic, programming, and computer architecture.

Course Requirements

The minor in Computer Engineering requires 19 credit hours of coursework, including: 10 credits of core courses, 6 credit hours selected from a group of 5 approved courses, and 3 credit hours of a 300-level computer engineering elective.

Admission Requirements

Students must submit a completed Declaration of Minor form (available through the Office of the Registrar). A maximum of 3 transfer credits allowed.

The minor in computer science provides students with a strong foundation in computing and programming to complement their major program of study.

Course Requirements

The minor in computer science requires the completion of six courses in Computer & Information Science (CIS)/Computer Engineering (CSE) courses with an overall grade point average of at least 2.5, and with no individual course grade below a C-. The minor program includes four core CIS courses, one additional upper-level CIS course, and one CIS or CSE elective at the 300-level or higher.

This minor provides students with an interdisciplinary foundation at the intersection of energy engineering, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure, and prepares students to address the growing global demand for efficient, intelligent, and sustainable energy solutions in data-intensive industries.

Course Requirements

The Datacenters, AI and Energy Systems Minor is an 18-credit program which includes four required core courses and two approved elective courses.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the energy systems minor is by permission of an academic advisor and minor coordinator and requires the student to be enrolled in a B.S. program at Syracuse University. Students must submit a completed Declaration of Minor form (available through the Office of the Registrar).

The Electrical Engineering minor provides a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals and linear systems. Students in this minor can choose to complete a track in a specific concentration area.

Course Requirements

The minor in Electrical Engineering requires at least 19 credit hours of coursework, including: 10 credits of core courses, 6 credit hours selected from a group of 5 approved courses, and 3 credit hours of an upper-level electrical engineering elective.

Admission Requirements

This minor program is available to any Syracuse University student who has completed the appropriate prerequisite courses, such as calculus and calculus-based physics. Students must submit a completed Declaration of Minor form (available through the Office of the Registrar). A maximum of 3 transfer credits is allowed.

This interdisciplinary minor is designed in partnership with the Whitman School of Management to provide Engineering and Computer Science students with a relevant non-technical minor to build their managerial and leadership skills.

Course Requirements

The Engineering and Computer Science Management minor consists of two core courses, two upper-level management courses, and two additional courses in accounting, economics, marketing or management. All 18 credits must be taken through Syracuse University for the letter grade. No transfer credit will be considered for the minor.

Admission Requirements

This minor is open to all SU students with approval of their home college. To be admitted to the program, students must submit a completed Declaration of Minor form (available through the Office of the Registrar).

The environmental engineering minor allows students to learn about the scientific, engineering, and social foundations of the field, preparing them to incorporate sustainable best practices and apply responsible management of natural resources into their future careers.

Course Requirements

To complete this minor, students must take a minimum of 18 credits, including three core courses and three upper-level (300 or above) electives. Students must take at least three CEE courses that do not apply to their major requirements. Students enrolled in this program have the option to focus on one specific discipline (Hydrology and Hydraulics, Water Quality, or Sustainability) or explore several areas of environmental engineering.

Today’s infrastructure professionals are challenged to create and employ innovative techniques for building, financing, managing, designing, and envisioning infrastructure. The Infrastructure, Cities, and the Future minor is designed to prepare students as leaders in the infrastructure industry, engaging in research and practice as the field evolves. More broadly, the minor prepares students to participate in design, policy choices, and decision-making about infrastructure development and management, whether as informed citizens or infrastructure professionals.

To complete this interdisciplinary minor, students must take a minimum of 18 credits, including three core courses and three electives, with a combined GPA of at least 2.0.

Admission Requirements

This minor is available to all University undergraduate students with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above. A maximum of three transfer credits is allowed. To be admitted to the program, students must submit a completed Declaration of Minor form (available through the Office of the Registrar).

The Minor in Materials Science and Engineering offers undergraduate students a focused exploration into the fundamental principles and applications of materials within modern technology. This minor serves as an excellent complement to various engineering and science majors, enriching students’ comprehension of the pivotal role that materials play in shaping technological advancements.

Course Requirements

The minor program in Materials Science and Engineering consists of an 18-credit curriculum, comprising 6 core credits and 12 elective credits. All 18 credits must be taken through Syracuse University for the letter grade. Of the 18 credits, 12 credits must be at the 300-level or above. No transfer credit will be considered for the minor.
