The College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) is proud to announce the selection of Bryan S. Kim as the inaugural Pramod and Anju Varshney Endowed Faculty Fellow. This endowed fellowship is made possible through a generous gift by Distinguished Professor Pramod K. Varshney and his late wife, Anju Varshney G’86, G’90.
Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), where he teaches courses such as operating systems, computer organization, and storage systems for big data. An expert in computer systems and architecture, Kim’s research interests are centered around the performance, reliability, and scalability of data storage systems.
“The Varshney name carries a lot of weight, and I am grateful for the establishment of, and my selection for, the Fellowship,” says Kim. “I have met a lot of successful researchers and faculty who have been mentored by Professor Varshney. I strive to follow in his footsteps in collaborative research and doctoral student mentoring.”
Varshney established the Pramod and Anju Varshney Endowed Faculty Fellowship to recognize and support a promising, full-time EECS faculty member dedicated to both research and mentorship.
“I am proud to support the next generation of EECS faculty members via the endowed Varshney Faculty Fellowship,” says Varshney. “It will enable younger faculty members to perform foundational research which will not only enhance Syracuse University’s reputation but will also have societal impact.”
“This new endowed fellowship is just another example of how Prof. Varshney gives back to the faculty, the college, and the university. We thank him for this generous gift, and are proud to recognize Dr. Kim as its first recipient,” says interim dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, Jennifer Ross.
As the first recipient of this fellowship, Kim embodies the Varshneys’ commitment to shepherding doctoral candidates through their academic journeys and advancing transformational research that makes a positive impact on society.
“I am glad we could support Dr. Kim as the inaugural Varshney Faculty Fellow,” says Alex K. Jones, EECS Department Chair and Klaus Schroder Endowed Professor for Engineering. “His work exemplifies societal impact, through his innovative research in storage systems with technology transfer to international partners, his leadership in the LEAP Alliance to advance the placement of underrepresented Ph.D. graduates in academia, and his strong sustainability focus that I know firsthand through a multi-million-dollar funded research project on which we collaborate.”
Prior to joining ECS in 2019, Kim was a postdoctoral researcher at Seoul National University, where he earned both a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He completed his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley.
Kim serves as an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Storage (TOS), the premier academic journal for data storage research and practice, and holds patents in both the United States and Korea. He is a 2025 recipient of the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award.
