Syracuse University Students Win Green Building Poster Competition

Students from the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) at Syracuse University were among those recognized at the 2026 New York State Green Building Conference’s Ken Bobis Student Poster Competition, held on March 5 in Syracuse.

ECS students Gargi De and Sabrina Savino won first and second place, respectively, in the graduate poster category. State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) students Alyssa Jacoby and Aatith Biswa won first and second place in the undergraduate poster category.

Now in its 24th year, the NYS Green Building Conference is hosted by SUNY ESF in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council New York Upstate and Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems (SyracuseCoE). It is the premier conference for green building researchers, architects, engineers, construction managers, and other practitioners in the Northeast.

The winning posters are:

  • First place, graduate student category: “Mycelium-based Double Network Composites for Indoor Air Filtration,” by Gargi De, ECS (in collaboration with Tong Lin, Jianshun Zhang, and Zhao Qin) 
  • Second place, graduate student category: “Hybrid Physics-AI Digital Twins for Building Energy Optimization,” by Sabrina Savino, Syracuse University College of Engineering and Computer Science 
  • First place, undergraduate student category: “Feasibility of alternative heating systems for SUNY ESF’s Wanakena Ranger School,” by Alyssa Jacoby, SUNY ESF (in collaboration with Jenna Smith, Charlotte Smith, Sergio Jaen, and Aidan Attina)
  • Second place, undergraduate student category: “Comprehensive IoT-based Monitoring of Air Quality and Thermal Comfort: An Indoor-Outdoor University Campus Case Study,” by Aatith Biswa, SUNY ESF (in collaboration with Fahad Iqbal and Shayan Mirzabeigi)

The student poster competition is named in memory of Onondaga Community College Professor Ken Bobis, a longtime member of the NYSGBC Advisory Committee.
