Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Students Complete Year of Industry-Sponsored Design Projects

Seventeen senior capstone teams from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University presented their yearlong design projects this week, showcasing work developed in partnership with major aerospace, defense, energy and technology companies.

The annual capstone showcase featured teams that spent the academic year tackling engineering challenges brought directly by industry sponsors, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Navy, Carrier, DuPont and TTM Technologies, among others. Additional sponsors included JMA Wireless, ASHRAE, AMX, C-Pursuit, Red Cat, Camelot Secure, Gear Motions, Tensilastic Energy and Tunabiotics — 17 sponsoring organizations in total.

Projects this year spanned aerospace systems, defense technologies, semiconductor manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence, sustainable energy and medical devices.

University Provost and Vice Chancellor Lois Agnew and Interim Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science Jennifer Ross attended the event, joining company sponsors, faculty mentors, alumni and judges.

“This program is designed to move students beyond classroom theory and into professional engineering practice, requiring teams to manage evolving requirements, budget and timeline constraints,” said Professor Alex Deyhim. I’m so proud of how they overcame challenges and dealt with technical problems in direct communication with their industry clients.”

The capstone program represents a signature component of the college’s experiential learning curriculum and is intended to prepare graduating engineers for immediate entry into the workforce.
