Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department Chair Alex K. Jones Recognized by IEEE for Academic Innovation

Alex K. Jones, Department Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), has been recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his substantial contributions to the discipline. Professor Jones was selected as a 2025 recipient of IEEE’s Technological Innovation Academic Award for his work in novel device technologies, sustainable computing, and embodied energy optimization.

“Designing energy-efficient and sustainable computing systems has been a driving passion throughout my career, especially as the global expansion of data centers accelerates with advances in AI,” says Jones.

In addition to leading the EECS department, Jones is the Klaus Schroder Endowed Professor for Engineering. He and Professor Bryan Kim recently received a $2M National Science Foundation award to improve the efficiency of data centers using chiplet technologies.

“My recognition is only possible due to the collective efforts of exceptional colleagues, partners, and an outstanding group of students with whom I have been fortunate to work,” Jones says. “I am deeply grateful for their contributions and view the award as a shared testament to the impact we have made together.”

Founded in 1963, IEEE is a membership organization representing over 486,000 engineering and STEM professionals worldwide. Jones was elevated to an IEEE Fellow in 2023, an elite distinction reserved for members who have achieved extraordinary accomplishments in their respective fields.
