Engineering and Computer Science Advising

Your Success Advisor is available to assist you in a variety of ways, both virtual and in-person. 

• Scheduling through Orange Success (instructions below, or watch the first part of the tutorial video): 
  1. Log into Orange Success via MySlice 
  2. Select “My Success Network” 
  3. Click “Schedule an Appointment” on the right side of their name 
  4. Pick a time that works best with your schedule 
  5. At the time of your appointment, follow the instructions in your confirmation email from Orange Success (which may have gone to your spam) 
• Drop Ins – should be utilized ONLY for quick questions, otherwise please schedule an appointment 
• Please go directly to your Success Advisors’ office and knock, if they are available to meet briefly, they will 
• Please note – if you are feeling ill for any reason, please do not attend appointments/drop-ins in person.  Please join virtually (information on Orange Success) or reschedule. 

Student Connections 

• First and second year students meet regularly with their success advisor to establish a strong foundation for success during college.  These meetings cover goal setting, creating a plan for achieving those goals, address potential barriers to success, and provide strategies and skill development for success.
• Students on academic probation meet with their success advisor as part of our Academic Recovery Initiative to identify barriers to academic success, strategies and resources for improving academic performance, and ongoing encouragement to stay on track
• All students are encouraged to stay connected with their success advisor for ongoing support and encouragement.
• The success advisors work closely with the ECS Living Learning Community in Shaw Hall.

Monitoring Progress through Orange Success

• Success advisors monitor students’ progress through Orange Success and encourage students to meet with them if they have flags or other concerns in their courses

Success Strategy Workshops

• Collaboration with ECS 101 Faculty: success advisors collaborate with the faculty who teach ECS 101 to implement success outcomes during the first semester as part of the course
• Classroom Workshops: Faculty may request a success strategies workshop for their class. These workshops can be done either during a scheduled class time, or as an out-of-class assignment. Faculty who are interested in this opportunity should submit this request form as early as possible.
• Stand Alone success workshops are open to the College throughout the academic year

Social and Wellness Programming

• The success advising program facilitates regular activities which promote community building in ECS.  Examples of what has been done in the past include game nights, DIY craft nights, ice skating, and a trip to a Syracuse Crunch hockey game.
• Overall wellness is important to a students’ success in college.  The success advisors coordinate Wellness Wednesday programming throughout the semester, as well as De-Stress Fest each semester.

Collaboration with Campus Partners

• The student success advisors work very closely with a variety of campus partners to facilitate a robust and holistic support network for students.
• These partners include (but are not limited to) the Office of Student Outreach and Support, the Barnes Center at the Arch which provides health, wellness and counseling services; the Center for Disability Resources; the Office of Student Living; and the various Cultural Centers on campus.

As a member of your advising team, your Student Success Advisor is your resource for success in ECS. We provide ongoing assistance through regular meetings and programming to support your transition to college and overall student experience, provide strategies for academic and personal success, connect you with resources, and monitor your academic progress.

ECS Career Advising 

Career Services provides students with the tools they need to succeed in today’s job market. We maintain close relationships with industry leaders who regularly connect with our students through information sessions, lobby tabling, career fairs, on-campus interviewing, and more. Our strong connection to the industry coupled with our workshops, seminars, office hours, and drop-in advising allows us to empower our students to successfully reach their professional goals.

ECS Faculty Advising 

Faculty/ Major Advisors ensure that students understand their discipline and curriculum, assist with course selection, support degree progress, and provide professional development and career advice. 

Students meet with their Faculty/ Major Advisor each semester to discuss their courses for the following semester to ensure they remain on track with their curriculum. 

You can find your Faculty/Major Advisors’ contact information in your Success Network on Orange Success. Many advisors also utilize Orange Success to schedule their appointments. If they do not, you can contact your advisor via email to schedule an appointment.

ECS Professional Advising Mission, Vision, and Outcomes: 

Mission: To provide all students a robust and holistic undergraduate experience by empowering them to seek opportunities to become successful through outreach, engagement, and relationship building in an inclusive environment. Our staff takes a team approach to connecting students with a network of resources for academic, social, and career development. 

Vision: We want to see every student succeed in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Starting in the first semester, each undergraduate student will be assigned to a support network consisting of a Faculty Advisor, career advisor and success advisor to guide them on academic, professional, and personal matters from their transition to college through degree completion.   

Outcomes: Through engagement with the College of Engineering and Computer Science and their Advising Team, upon graduation, an ECS undergraduate student: 

• Will have established a personal, academic, and professional support network 
• Will have developed a peer network through involvement in college activities, mentoring opportunities, and leadership experiences 
• Will be able to develop and model an accurate sense of self; cultivate a profound understanding of personal motivation; and practice personal, academic, & professional responsibility 
• Will proactively make every effort to increase their skill sets and remain abreast of the latest technology so as to maintain a competitive advantage

Academic Excellence Workshops

Academic Excellence Workshops (AEW) are geared toward achieving success in courses in engineering, mathematics and science. AEW sessions are peer-facilitated, one-credit courses designed to supplement the instruction in many first and second-year courses. Students are able to register for these classes during the course add period via MySlice.

Participants not only leave with an excellent understanding of the material, but also with new organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills. The Academic Excellence Workshop is an excellent opportunity to meet your peers and establish new study groups as you learn essential course material.

Course Support

In addition to Academic Excellence Workshops, the College is committed to offering a number of different resources to ensure student success. There are a number of ways that students can find help with academic coursework including peer tutoring.

Peer Office Hours

Weekly peer office hours are available to help all engineering and computer science students with their coursework in calculus and other fundamental engineering courses supported by the AEW program. A complete schedule of these sessions is available on the Peer Office Hours calendar.

Math Support

There are a number of Math Clinics available to help students through their coursework in calculus and other math disciplines.

Physics Support

The Physics department offers help with coursework through the Physics Clinic.

Group Tutoring Support

The Center for Learning and Student Success (CLASS) provides and facilitates academic support services, including free small-group tutoring for many courses each semester.  A current list of courses and sign-up information can be found at the Center for Learning and Student Success.

Engineering and Computer Science Living Learning Community

The Engineering and Computer Science Living Learning Community (ECS LLC) is housed in Shaw Hall, home of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) residential college. Being part of the residential college, students in the ECS LLC are clustered together based on academic interest and have access to additional resources in the building. These include academic counselor support, study lounges with in-hall computer clusters, and faculty involvement.
