Center for Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing
The Center for Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (CASM) advances the science, engineering, and application of robotics, artificial intelligence, sustainable operations, and advanced manufacturing technologies - training a new generation of innovators through hands-on, experiential learning alongside cutting-edge research. Housed within Syracuse University's Center for Science and Technology and situated inside the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS), CASM is part of a more than $100 million investment in strategically transforming STEM and expanding ECS at Syracuse University over the next five years.
CASM is equipped with automated robots designed to work together and a state-of-the-art control room that replicates a modern, autonomous manufacturing line. The result is a teaching and research environment that mirrors real-world industrial production — giving students hands-on, experiential training on live systems while giving faculty and industry partners a proving ground to test next-generation, sustainable manufacturing solutions. From AI-enabled monitoring and control to resource- and fault-aware operations, the facility supports the full path from classroom learning to shared, industry-ready demonstration.
Three Foundational Pillars
Experiential Learning
Giving students direct, hands-on time on connected robotics, control-room systems, and live demonstrators that mirror real-world manufacturing. Students and faculty work side-by-side developing, testing, and maintaining the intelligent, precision-driven systems that define modern manufacturing environments — training the next generation of innovators through practice, not just coursework.
Human + Machine: Industry 5.0
Harnessing advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to advance Industry 5.0, where human expertise and intelligent automation work together to create industries that are more adaptive, resilient, and sustainable. This pillar spans robotics, mechatronics, and AI-enabled systems — from perception and digital twins to edge deployment — alongside the resource, contaminant, and fault-monitoring systems that keep manufacturing efficient and environmentally responsible.
University-Industry Partnership
CASM is an innovation hub where industry partners come to solve real manufacturing challenges alongside Syracuse University faculty and students. This pillar turns CASM's facility, research, and talent into a collaborative engine — one where industry needs shape research direction, shared demonstrators move ideas from concept to proof, and students gain direct exposure to industry practice.
Who CASM Serves
CASM gives students hands-on, experiential training on live manufacturing systems, gives faculty a venue to turn research into real-world solutions through challenge-driven focus groups and funded proposals, and gives industry partners access to CASM as an innovation hub for solving real manufacturing challenges. The center brings together expertise in artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.
