Dr. Shi’s group research is at the interface of materials, advanced manufacturing, and AI-driven methodology to push the frontiers of extreme batteries for energy storage and passive thermal-management technologies for temperature regulation and water harvesting. The group designs novel electrolyte chemistries and manufacturing approaches to achieve extremely safe, extremely fast-charging, and extremely energy–dense batteries. In parallel, the group designs novel passive materials and materials architectures that enable temperature regulation and water harvesting. By combining fundamental science and applied engineering, the group eventually advances sustainable solutions to address grand challenges in energy and environment for a circular economy.
