Welcome to the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University.
If you're drawn to engineering because you want to build things that matter - devices that heal, machines that move people and goods, aircraft for travel and defense, and spacecraft that push the boundaries of what's possible - you're in the right place. Our department brings together two closely allied disciplines. Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most impactful engineering disciplines, touching everything from medical devices and home appliances to energy systems and industrial machinery. Aerospace engineering applies that same expertise in the design of aircraft and spacecraft for civilian and military use, at the leading edge of flight and space exploration. Here, you'll learn from faculty who are dedicated teachers in addition to being active, recognized scholars and researchers. Both of our undergraduate programs are ABET-accredited, giving you and your family confidence in the quality and rigor of the education you'll receive.
The Value of Experiential Learning
What differentiates mechanical and aerospace engineering at SU from similar programs at other universities is how much of your education happens outside the traditional classroom.
- Senior Capstone Program: You have the opportunity to work on a diverse set of industry-sponsored projects from more than 30 companies on real engineering problems. You may also choose to participate in national design competitions.
- Research Programs: Many of our undergraduates also conduct research alongside faculty through programs like our Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). This research often results in conference presentations, journal publications, and national recognition.
- More Programs: Our students participate in our Honors Program, Study Abroad , and flexibly pursue a minor in one of the more than 70 disciplines a university with Syracuse’s breadth can offer.

- Other Syracuse engineering graduates pursue graduate study at institutions such as Georgia Tech, Penn State, and USC.
Opportunities for Furthering Your Education
For students looking to take their education further, our master’s degree program can be completed in as little as one year, with partial scholarships available to qualified students, and our interdisciplinary M.S. in Engineering Management is offered both on campus and online. Doctoral students work closely with a faculty mentor to pursue original research, often supported through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, or university fellowships.
